MSF course says you can't really control the guy behind you, so double YOUR following distance. The rationale is that bikes can generally out pace and out manuever cars, so by doubling your following distance, you've got more room to gradually slow down, or swerve out front between two cars if the collision is imminent.
I think I like the "pullover and let the jerk pass" option best...
